Anna-Louise Reysenbach, Portland State University – Chief Scientist
Anna-Louise is a Professor in the biology department at Portland State University. During this cruise her lab will be exploring the metabolic and phylogenetic diversity of thermophiles from the ELSC deep-sea vents.











Jeffrey Seewald, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute – Co-PI
Jeff is a Senior Scientist at WHOI whose lab specializes in studying hydrothermal fluid chemistry. During this cruise he will be sampling and analyzing the chemistry of hydrothermal fluids and gases.










Alberto (Tito) Collasius, Jason expedition leader and chief pilot
Tito is the Jason Expedition Leader for this cruise and lives in Woods Hole, MA where he enjoys motorcycling and boating.












Casey Agee, Jason Engineer
Casey keeps the Jason electrical systems working and enjoys hiking in the outdoors when at home in Florida.











Carlo Carere, GNS Science Te Pü Ao / Scion, New Zealand
Carlo is a Postdoctorate Researcher at GNS studying microbial ecology at terrestrial hot springs. He is interested in studying methanotrophy and hydrogenase diversity during the cruise.













Wan-Yen (Vivian) Cheng, National Taiwan University, Taiwan
Vivian is a graduate student in the Institute of Oceanography at NTU where she studies the chemistry of mud volcanoes. On this cruise she will be assisting in the collection and analysis of hydrothermal fluid samples.











Richard Davis, Portland State University
Rick is a Postdoctorate Researcher at Portland State University and will be performing metagenomic analysis of sulfide chimney samples.













Guy Evans, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute / MIT
Guy is a graduate student with Meg Tivey at WHOI. He will be studying the geology of massive sulfide deposits on this cruise.













Gilberto Flores, California State University, Northridge
Gilbert is an Assistant Professor in the biology department at Cal State University, Northridge. He will focus on linking microbial ecology with geochemical gradients at each vent site.









Niya Grozeva, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute / MIT
Niya is a graduate student with Frieder Klein and Jeff Seewald at WHOI. She will be assisting in the collection and analysis of hydrothermal fluid samples.












Morgan Haldeman, University of Rhode Island
Morgan is an undergraduate the University of Rhode Island and will be assisting in the collection and analysis of hydrothermal fluid samples.







Bud Hale, Scripps Institute of Oceanography
Bud works for ship technical support at SIO and will be providing informatics support on the cruise. While at home in San Diego, Bud enjoys working on classic cars.











Scott Hansen, Jason pilot
Scott currently lives in Seattle and enjoys sailing in his free time.













Jessica Hardwicke, Portland State University
Jessica is an undergraduate student at Portland State University who will be aiding in sample collection and culturing of thermoacidophiles.











Brett Hembrough, Scripps Institute of Oceanography
Brett works for ship technical support at SIO and is our resident technician (ResTech) on the cruise where he supports science and acts as a conduit between the ships crew and the expedition. He enjoys surfing, hiking, and hunting when at home in San Diego.











Karen Houghton, GNS Science Te Pü Ao / University of Waikato, New Zealand
Karen is a graduate student with Matt Stott and GNS and Ian Macdonald at the University of Waikato. She will concentrate on culturing high temperature methanotrophs and acidophiles on the cruise.










John Kelley, Portland State University
John is a graduate student at Portland State University. He will attempt to culture novel thermophilic acidiphiles while on the ship and analyze metagenomic libraries after the cruise.











Akel Kevis-Stirling – Jason Pilot
Akel lives in England and enjoys surfing around the world.















Stephane L'Haridon, Université de Bretagne Occidentale, France
Stephane is a Research Scientist at the Laboratoire de Microbiologie des Environnements Extremes, IUEM, Brest France. He will be using novel culturing techniques to isolate and study thermophilic organisms.











Chris Lathan, Jason Engineer
Chris lives in Houston Texas where he enjoys sailing and not getting his picture taken.











Scott McCue, Jason Engineer
Scott will be in charge of Jason data processing on the cruise. He is a martial arts instructor when home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.













Alexander Merkel, Winogradsky Institute Of Microbiology, Russia
Alexander is a Research Fellow at the Winogradsky Institute and will be using real-time PCR to quantify microbial diversity and functional genes involved in methanogenesis and sulfate reduction.












James Pelowski, Jason Engineer
James will help operate Jason and coordinate setting up the elevator with the science crew. He lives in Endicott, New York where he enjoys playing the guitar.












Olga Podosokorskaya, Winogradsky Institute of Microbiology, Russia
Olga is a Research Scientist at the Winogradsky Institute and will focus on the cultivation of novel deeply-rooted methanogens and organotrophs.












Nicholas Rhoades, California State University, Northridge
Nick is an undergraduate student at Cal State University, Northridge and will be characterizing the diversity of the microbial communities using 16S rRNA gene profiles.












Phil Santos, Jason Engineering Assistant
Phil is usually works for the Alvin team, but is helping out with Jason operations on this cruise. He enjoys hiking when at home in Florida.










Sean Sylva, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute
Sean is a Research Associate in Jeff Seewald's lab at WHOI and is assisting with the geochemical analyses of the high temperature fluids.











Jimmy Varnum, Jason Pilot
Jimmy lives in Seattle, WA and enjoys bicycling and playing the guitar for his wife, Julie.










Korey Verhein, Jason Pilot
Korey lives in Falmouth, MA where he enjoys playing tabletop games.
